Nuiqsut is located on the west bank of the Nechelik Channel of the Colville River Delta, about 35 miles from the Beaufort Sea coast. It lies at approximately 70° 11' N Latitude and 151 ° 00' W Longitude. The area encompasses 8.3 sq. miles of land and .0 sq. miles of water. |

Nuiqsut is located at the head of the Colville
River Delta, about 30 miles inland from the BeauLort Sea and
54 miles southeast of Barrow. The Colville River Delta has traditionally
been a gathering and trading place for the Inupiat and a good
source for hunting and fishing. 92.7% of the population are Natives.
A federally-recognized Native organization is located in the community. After 27 Barrow families moved
overland to the area, the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation funded
construction of the village in 1974. The new residents lived
in a tent city for 18 months before permanent housing could be
built Nuiqsut was incorporated as a second class city in 1975. |

| Culture & Demographics: | ||
| The majority of the population are Inupiaq Eskimos practicing a traditional subsistence lifestyle. The sale, importation or possession of alcohol is banned in the village. During the April 1990 U.S. Census, there were 102 total housing units, and 11 of these were vacant. 103 jobs were estimated to be in the community. The official unemployment rate st that time was 33.1%. 48.2% of all adults were not in the work force. The median household income was $32,188, and 13.3% of residents were living below the poverty level. | ||
| Economy & Transportation: | ||
| Employment in Nuiqsut is limited, partially due to its isolation. Air travel provides the only year-round access. The airstrip is owned and operated by the North Slope Borough. Marine and land transportation provide seasonal access. | ||
| Climate: | ||
| The climate is arctic. Temperatures range from -56 to 78. Precipitation is light, averaging 5 inches, with annual snowfall of 20 inches. | ||
| Facilities & Utilities: | ||
| Schools and Health Care The North Slope Borough provides all utilities in Nuiqsut. Water is derived from a surface source and is treated. Residents have individual water tanks with water delivery, and use honeybuckets. Hauling services are provided. A majority of homes have running water to the kitchen. Funds have been requested to provide a piped system with flush toilets, showers and other household plumbing. Electricity is provided by North Slope Borough Power & Light System. There is one school located in the community, attended by 150 students. Health care is provided locally by Nuiqsut Health Clinic. Auxilliary health care is provided by Nuiqsut Volunteer Fire Dept. (480-6613). | ||
